Pets and Babies
Bringing a new baby into your home can sometimes be a stressful experience for your dog or cat. Here are a few tips for introducing a brand new baby to your pet.
Before You Bring the Baby Home
Make sure your pet is easy to control and his or her behavior is predictable. Obedience train your pet now, before the baby is born.
Expose your pet to babies and small children so he or she can get used to their behavior patterns.
Before the baby is brought into the house, buy a doll and bathe it, feed it, put it to bed and generally treat it as if it were a real baby. This will help your dog or cat get used to sharing your attention.
While the baby is still in the hospital, bring home a blanket of piece of the baby's clothing so that your pet can become familiar with the baby's scent.
After You Bring the Baby Home
When you bring the baby home, be sure your dog or cat also gets lavish attention from you.
Don't infringe on the rights of your pet. If your pet has a favorite sleeping area, don't put the baby's bassinet there. Make sure your pet can continue to eat and sleep in peace.
Ask your veterinarian for additional tips on how this transition can be made less stressful for your pet and you.
